Leroy stood in front of the thirteen-story apartment building where Marilyn lived. He paced about in front of the building, checking his phone to make sure that he got the right place. It was running into five minutes already, and Marilyn had still not come out. Marilyn was not popular for her punctuality record either. If Connor did not have a soft spot for her, she would have had some trouble, for sure. He raised his phone to his ear to call her again, when he saw her walk outside through the front door, accompanied by her building’s porter.

Marilyn flashed her biggest smile, as a peace offering. Leroy shook his head, unable to hide the smile that formed on his face. He was annoyed at her because she did not ask him to come up, when he first called her that he had arrived. He thought it was a mistake, so he asked, and she refused him politely. Sometimes, he felt like he had a read on Marilyn, and other times, he was clueless. This time, he felt the latter.

“Just get in the cab,” he instructed, as he took some of her bags off her.

Leroy wanted to make sure that she actually went home. He just was not convinced of her conviction to make the trip home, anytime they talked about it, but she did not tell him why. She’d better face her demons, if she planned to conquer them. He was just doing his part as a good friend. He got in the passenger’s seat, in front of the car, while Marilyn entered the back. They made the trip to the airport in silence, except for when Leroy urged the driver on.

“Thank you for accomoanying me to the airport, Leroy. You know you did not have to.”

“I’ve never seen you grow cold feet like this before. I wasn’t sure you’d go, if I didn’t do this.”

“You are paranoid. I’m not enthusiastic, but I was going to go anyway.”

“Naa… I had to make sure. And don’t forget to send pictures.”

Leroy’s voice went up a pitch, as he tried to hide that he was out of breath, while they weaved through the crowd at the airport. The lobby teemed with families and their children, pushing past one another, as they tried to get to their destinations, all over the country. She wondered how many of them also dreaded their trips. Family gatherings were known for the racist uncles and tone-deaf aunties. The gatherings would never end, if they did not start the arguments that made people leave the table, in a fit of rage.

“I will. Just know that you did this to me. You fed me to the dragons.”

“I just hope that the dragons leave enough of you for me to ask why you didn’t invite me upstairs today.”

“I knew you were still going to ask about that. It’s just that I haven’t had anyone over in a while. My place is a mess. It might even ignite memories of a pig pen, in your mind.
